Ellen is Leaving is one of six New Zealand short films selected to compete in the first ever New Zealand’s Best 2012 short film competition at NZIFF 2012.

From the NZIFF website:

This year for the first time they compete at the NZIFF. Festival programmers Bill Gosden and Michael McDonnell viewed 109 submissions to make a shortlist of 12 from which filmmaker Roger Donaldson selected these six finalists. A jury of three will select the winners of the $5000 Madman Entertainment Jury Prize and the $3000 Friends of the Civic Award.

Ellen is Leaving is a beautifully shot short about a quirky yet very relatable girl Ellen, who is heading overseas to go travelling. Those of us in our 20s and 30s who have ever travelled will find something to relate too – I’m not sure all of us would go as far as Ellen, but we can certainly understand her motivation. I really enjoyed the film, and thought that the music was especially well suited – there really was a Wellington vibe to it.

The official synoposis:

About Ellen is Leaving: Ellen is leaving because she can. Travel is the cancer of modern relationships. Ellen needs to find her sad-sack of a boyfriend, Hamish, a nice leaving gift to try and help the mutual breakup feel a bit better. When Hamish jokingly suggests she get him a new girlfriend Ellen realises it’s actually the perfect idea and sets out to find him the right girl. But when things start going a bit better than planned, Ellen starts to lose her nerve. Can she really give him up?

A trailer for the film can be viewed here,  and the film’s Facebook page can be found here.

Screening times:

Auckland – Saturday 28 July 6.30pm (Skycity Theatre) & Monday 30 July 2.00pm (Skycity Theare).

Wellington – Wednesday 1 August 7.00pm (Paramount) & Thursday 2 August 1.30pm (Paramount).

I urge you to go along and check out this film – you’ll get to see a great film and support an up-and-coming film-maker.

Ellen is Leaving is a short film directed by Michelle Savill, produced by Desray Armstrong, executive produced by Gaylene Preston, and written by Martha Hardy-Ward.
