Captain-America-Civil-War-One-Sheet-Teaser

In Civil War, the thirteenth instalment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the focus shifts back to Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America (Chris Evans). This is his third film as central protagonist, joining Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark with as many films. It seems fitting that these two come to a head here, as Rogers finds his allegiance torn between Stark and The Avengers and his old friend, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who finds himself the subject of a global manhunt. Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) return to direct, again proving to be very competent in their choreography of the action sequences and their ability to find a deft balance of humour as they probe into deep human emotion, and further explore the intense physicality of the characters under pressure.

ant-man

A suit that shrinks a man to the size of an ant, but gives the wearer superhuman strength. There’s a reason Dr. Pym (Michael Douglas) buried the technology many years ago; but now the threat of it being released is real. Dr. Pym has just the man in mind to prevent it happening. Marvel’s Ant-Man is reviewed after the jump.

ultron

It is now three years ago that The Avengers hit international cinemas, breaking Box Office records and sending adoring lifelong Marvel fans and appreciative film goers alike into a frenzy. Since then the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans) each scoring a new film, and the franchise shot into space with the nostalgic space opera Guardians of the Galaxy. Joss Whedon is back to write and direct Age of Ultron, which will deliver everything fans of the franchise could possibly hope for, while exceeding most of the prior instalments in scope and fun.

Guardians of the Galaxy

I have no intention of spoiling any details, jokes or events of this film so the following review will stick to allusions and a generalised examination.

My grandfather had the greatest impact on my love for sci-fi. He had a towering floor to ceiling bookshelf, divided into three sections: mysteries, war, and sci-fi. The former two did little for me, but I’ll never forget those sci-fi covers, Panther editions especially. It took many years for my reading level to catch up enough to finally begin reading them, but those covers, from E.E ‘Doc’ Smith through Robert Heinlein and unto Asimov’s Robots, are ingrained in my psyche; giant robots, strange alien trees, spacecraft in shapes that spoke to some strange lizard brain mythology. Today I saw a film that understood the allure of those images, and captured the complex strange world from which they sprang.

Well this looks fun. Set in a fictional city which is San Fran meets Tokyo, a super intelligent boy named Hiro Hamada and he robot he built (Baymax) stumble across a criminal plot and pull together a team of inexperienced crime-fighters to bring down the baddies.

I wasn’t surprised to learn it’s based on a Marvel superhero team of the same name, if anything, I’m surprised that it’s taken this long for Disney to include Marvel characters in an original animated film.

My only question – why couldn’t the super nerdy science genius be a girl? Just saying….

The film is set for a release in Australia on Boxing Day, the same spot Frozen opened in last year and Wreck it Ralph the year before.

Captain America may have been engineered as the World’s greatest solider, but he’s also a man with scruples and morals, he fights for the greatest good. What will he do when all he fights for is called into question? My review of Captain America: The Winter Soldier after the jump.
