Halloween is my favourite time of year so October becomes a marathon of horror, discovering new gems and revisiting old favourites. Here are a list of eight films which don’t get enough love, which don’t often feature on recommended lists, but most definitely should.
I (Chris Elena) have been asked many times what I think the best movies of the past decade are; and after being asked just recently, I just couldn’t help but write this much delayed list. These are films that I think say something about the films we watch or the genres we’re aware of and defy some and/or all conventions we’re so accustomed to.
These aren’t necessarily in my order of preference, I love all the films mentioned unconditionally but I rank them in importance.
These are the movies that to me defied storytelling and cliché in some way. Check them out after the jump.
Summer is upon us! For those of us in this neck of the woods, that means we play catch up with the US and get to see many of the films being touted as serious Oscar contenders.
After the jump check out Chris & Sam’s most anticipated summer releases.
This is the ninth post in the “The Best Films Set In…” series. This week, Chris Elena makes a first attempt at listing his favourites. The setting can be a place (like Tokyo), a location (like the beach), or a time (like Winter). In these posts Chris is going to pick his 5 favourite films that are set in that particular place/location/time and explain why he likes them. Up this week is The Best Films Set In…New York! I can’t believe three-quarters of 2012 is now behind us! This quarter has seen me visit Melbourne and attend the Melbourne International Film Festival for the first time; I also covered the Korean Film Festival in Australia, Possible Worlds Canadian Film Festival, and The Sydney Underground Film Festival. Wow – it was super busy in parts! September has been a relatively quiet month, and I have taken a break from watching films daily – instead I focused on seeing new releases and watched the odd DVD.
I watched 82 feature films during this quarter (down from my 1 per day due to less activity in September). This takes my total to 273 feature films viewed thus far in 2012, which has me exactly on target for my goal of a film a day. You can check out my January – March round-up here, and April – June here. After the jump check out my top 10 “new to me” films for the third quarter of 2012.
This is the seventh post in my “The Best Films Set In…” series. The setting can be a place (like Tokyo), a location (like the beach), or a time (like Winter). In these posts I’m going to pick my 5 favourite films that are set in that particular place/location/time and explain why I like them. Up this week is The Best Films Set In…High school.
Ah Spring. Flowers are blooming, the temperature is rising, and the quality of films at the cinema is generally on the increase. After the jump check out my 10 most anticipated films due to be released this Spring.
This is the fifth post in the “The Best Films Set In…” series. The setting can be a place (like Tokyo), a location (like the beach), or a time (like Winter). In these posts I’m going to pick my 5 favourite films that are set in that particular place/location/time and explain why I like them.
Up this week, Wellington film student and lover of cinema Mark Roulston has kindly contributed a guest list for us. Mark spent time living in Vietnam, and therefore it’s only fitting that Vietnam is the setting for his guest post. Be sure to check out Mark’s writing at These Words Are Bullets.
Check out Mark’s picks for ‘The Best Films Set In…Vietnam”, after the jump!
