Back in 2012 the promising-looking Snow White and the Huntsman, a darker take on the classic fairy tale, failed to set the world on fire and has since been forgotten about by most who watched it. This completely unnecessary, and frankly surprising, new entry to the franchise, detailing events preceding and following those in the first film, seems set to experience a similar fate. This generally mediocre by-committee fantasy lacks scale and a clear vision, and again squanders an all-star cast, including new faces Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. Uneven performances, a confused narrative and an imbalance of tone – the narration alone deems it to silly for adults, and yet it possesses woefully miscued jokes that are too adult for youngsters – overshadow some elegant costumes, amusing supporting performances and mildly thrilling action sequences. HEART OF THE SEA

Ron Howard’s (Rush, A Beautiful Mind) latest film tells of an extraordinary story that became the inspiration for Herman Melville’s literary classic Moby Dick. This such story is based on Nathan Philbrick’s 2000 non-fiction book of the same name about the tragedy of whaling vessel ‘The Essex’ and both the on-board tensions that sparked between Captain and First Mate on the ill-fated 1820 voyage, and their battle with a mythical monster of the Ocean; an enormous white whale. Though it didn’t resonate with me as much as expected on an emotional level, and a slow-paced back end saps the effect of some of the more shocking revelations, In the Heart of the Sea is thrilling escapist cinema that almost lives up to its grand epic-cinema ambitions.

It is now three years ago that The Avengers hit international cinemas, breaking Box Office records and sending adoring lifelong Marvel fans and appreciative film goers alike into a frenzy. Since then the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans) each scoring a new film, and the franchise shot into space with the nostalgic space opera Guardians of the Galaxy. Joss Whedon is back to write and direct Age of Ultron, which will deliver everything fans of the franchise could possibly hope for, while exceeding most of the prior instalments in scope and fun.
