Due to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on the 17th Dec – and the gargantuan Box Office it is going to draw – distributors have pulled most of their films out of December. Boxing Day is still a big day, but we expect The Force Awakens to still be screening in at least 60% of available multiplex theatres by then.
But, Madman have decided to release the very interesting gambling addiction/buddy road-trip drama Mississippi Grind on 10 Dec in the wake of The Force Awakens in an exclusive to Nova, Melbourne. For everyone else in the country you’ll have to be content with having a week off the cinema, or go and catch crowd-pleasers Creed or The Night Before again.
Mississippi Grind – Gerry (Ben Mendelsohn) is a talented poker player, but his gambling habit is getting the best of him. One day, he meets a charismatic young traveler named Curtis (Ryan Reynolds). Deeming Curtis his lucky charm, Gerry convinces him that they should hit the road together. As they gamble their way down South toward a legendary high-stakes poker game in New Orleans, the trip’s highs and lows unveil the duo’s true character and motivation, and an undeniable bond forms between them. I liked it. It is an unusual film, but is carried by the moving chemistry between the male leads.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens – In this continuation of the “Star Wars” saga, balance returns to the Force as the First Order, emerging from the ashes of the Empire, clashes with the Resistance, which includes scrappy newcomers as well as heroes from the former Rebel Alliance. One of the most hyped-up films ever released. We have managed to avoid a lot of chatter, and only seen the trailer once, but we’re keeping our excitement under wraps. Remember, it has been 32 years since the last good Star Wars film.
