I can’t believe that we’ve reached the end of 2012. What a year for film! Making my top 20 Aus cinema releases was so incredibly hard. I could have easily written a different 15-20 on another day. I’ve been truly lucky to watch so many films this year, and I have to give huge thanks to Cam Williams, Blake Howard, Dwayne Lennox, Chris Elena, Andrew Buckle, Matt Pejkovic and many more for helping me establish myself in the film blogging community in Sydney. Thanks for your support, contacts and constant inspiration gents – without your help I would not have got this far.

As I had so many new release films to check out, my viewing this quarter was mostly new cinema releases and rewatches on DVD. Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to go back and watch too many classics (at least none I thought highly of anyway). I watched a total of 82 films in this quarter, which with added to the 273 from the first three-quarters, takes me to 355 films for 2012. Damn! I was oh so close to my film a day goal. There are still 2 days left of the year, but I think I’ll just chill and step away from the screen. It’s just a number after all…

After the jump check out my top 10 “new to me” films for the third quarter of 2012. I have also listed my 10 film related goals for 2013. Now that I’ve put them out there, I expect you lot to hold me to them!

only god forgives ryan gosling

With 2012 almost behind us, it’s time to start looking ahead to 2013 and what film goodness it will bring. Well it’s looking to be a good year, with some big name directors releasing new films, and favourite actors returning to our screens. But do you know what the most exciting thing is? The films that will probably end up wowing us, or being our favourites, are most likely completely unknown at this point. Look at your top 10 of 2012 – how many of those were you excited about in 2011?I bet at least half were films that blindsided you, or came onto your radar after festival screenings. Now isn’t that something to get excited about? After the jump, check out our top 10 most anticipated films for 2013 – well the ones that we know about now anyway.

the hobbit bilbo

If I told you about a movie involving a funny little British man’s house being raided by even smaller hairy men who eat and sing, which then results in all of them taking a hike in the forest to partake in a mission and in the process find themselves on this existential journey  – would you believe me that it’s not a sequel to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel but a prequel to the epic Lord Of The Rings series? Better yet, would you see it? My review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey after the jump.

les miserables

I dreamed a dream (or more of a nightmare really) that Les Misérables would be a painful experience and I would most likely hate every single note of it. Although I go into every film with an empty mind hoping to enjoy it, you could say that musicals aren’t exactly my thing. Imagine my surprise then when the nightmare didn’t eventuate. I have eaten my hat and am ready admit that this is a pretty great film. Review after the jump!

Project-X

2012 has been an amazing year for films. It was almost impossible to nail down a top 20 list, and the list of films that just missed out went really deep. But with the good, comes the bad, and 2012 has been no exception – it has been a particularly bad year for comedies and lame action flicks. After the jump, check out our picks for the worst 10 films of 2012.

In keeping with the official policy of posting anything Ryan Gosling related, here is the trailer for the upcoming crime drama from  Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance.

Starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes Ray Liotta and a whole bunch of other fantastic actors, the film is about a motorcycle stunt rider who starts committing bank robberies in order to provide for his family. Set over 15 years, it’s a tale of past decisions and the course our life takes because of them.

It looks gritty and intense, and I for one cannot wait.

The film is set to be released in the USA on March 29 2013 (limited); and in Australia on May 9 2013.

JackReacher

Okay, so putting aside the reach around jokes involving the title and the fact that the badass hero of the film is a mere 5ft 7, the fact of the matter is Jack Reacher is written and Directed by Christopher McQuarrie who wrote The Usual Suspects and stars Tom Cruise who [despite his day-to-day antics] is a powerhouse producer and actor. So with all of that in mind, does Jack Reacher succeed as an action thriller with smarts and intrigue? Find out after the jump.
